Elder – Mike Jones

Mike and Virginia Jones grew up in Pomona, CA and attended Pomona First Baptist Church most of those years.  Being a few years apart, they did not meet until Virginia entered the college career group, which was the night Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.  They married six months later, and they have been married 41 years.  Soon after they married, they moved to the San Fernando Valley.  Virginia and Mike were privileged to attend Grace Community Church where Virginia was baptized and they both became members. Their family began to grow as God blessed them with three wonderful daughters: Michelle, Rebekah, and Laura.

After a few years of wanting to get out of the “rat race”, they moved to the Oregon Coast where they lived on five beautiful acres.  After some searching for a home church, they settled at a Village Missions Church.  Mike taught the youth group and men’s Bible studies while Virginia was very involved with women’s ministry and sang at functions in the surrounding areas under Stonecroft Ministries.  A few years later, Mike sensed God’s call to the ministry with a heart for rural churches.  With the prayers and support of the congregation they moved to Canada and attended Briercrest Bible College to prepare for pastoral ministry.  It was a journey of faith on their limited resources, but God is faithful, and He provided for their needs miraculously in many ways.  While Mike worked hard at finishing his four-year degree, Virginia attended classes of interest and served as President of the Student Wives Association.

Following graduation, Mike and his family were called to pastor a church in rural Manitoba.  It was a growing and stretching time for their family.  Many joys, tears and struggles later, God was faithful to guide and direct their steps to return to serve on staff at Briercrest Bible College.  During this time, their daughters were able to enjoy a Christian education for elementary, middle school and college. They had many opportunities to grow and be challenged in the Lord.  Michelle traveled through Europe with Royal Servants witnessing to tourists in campgrounds.  Rebekah performed solos and toured for the college across Canada and Europe.  Their youngest daughter, Laura, spent a summer in Kenya with AIM building relationships and sharing the gospel.

Twelve years later, Mike accepted the call to pastor another rural church in Midale, Saskatchewan.  Virginia worked for Apache Oil in the nearby oil fields as a secretary and helped Mike with the many aspects of church development.  Besides Mike’s preaching, both were Sunday school teachers and youth group leaders.  Virginia also led the women’s ministry team.  Due to Virginia’s parent’s health issues during this time, they felt that God was calling them back to California to take care of their aging parents.  It was evident that the Joneses twenty-one years of ministry on the Canadian Prairies were coming to an end.  They returned to Temecula in 2002 to help care for Virginia’s mom who has since gone to be with the Lord.

The Joneses came to RBC in 2005.  Mike and Virginia worked in Awana for two years.  Mike has taught Bible studies in the summers and they both opened their home for Home Fellowship Groups.  Currently, Virginia serves on the Women’s Ministries Team and Mike serves as an elder and teacher.  In their free time they enjoy going to the beach, watching NASCAR, attending LA Angels games, and recently took up camping.

Verse of the Month

". . . walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:1-3)
