Why join a local church?

The New Testament stresses the vital importance of belonging to a local church.Reading the book of Acts for a Biblical history of Christianity, we see that the local church is the one way God used to advance the Gospel. Looking at the New Testament letters, we also see that they are addressed to local churches, not individuals. There is no Biblical basis for being a Christian who is not an involved member of a local church. The following are seven Biblical reasons to join a local church:

1. The local church is Jesus’ mission.

And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.” Matthew 16:18

2. The local church is where Christians are equipped to serve and grow up.

And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fulness of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13

3. The local church is where we are involved in mutual care and encouragement.

…and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more, as you see the day drawing near.Hebrews 10:24-25

4. The local church is where Biblical leadership is demonstrated.

The local church is led by elders who lead by shepherding and modeling a Christlike example.…shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. I Peter 5:2-3The qualifications for those who lead a church are clearly described in 1 Timothy 3:1-13, and Titus 1:5-9.

5. The local church is where missions begins and ends.

The local church in Antioch sent out Paul and Barnabas as missionaries.Acts 13:1-3The local church kept the missionary supported on the field.Philippians 4:14-19The result of missionary activity was the start of local churches.Titus 1:5

6. The local church is God’s place for maintaining holiness in our lives.

And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax-gatherer.“Matthew 18:17The leadership of a local church is charged by God to give an account for the lifestyles of those he oversees. Hebrews 13:17

7. The local church is where unbelievers can sense God’s presence in our worship.

…and so he will fall on his face and worship God, declaring that God is certainly among you.1 Corinthians 14:25 Are you an involved member of a local church? Join Christ’s company of committed followers! Join us in this exciting partnership of making disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ!
