Ministry SynopsisJoe and Donna Rider were raised in Christian homes and accepted Christ as Savior when they were children. They met in college and were married in 1987. Joe has worked in radio and television and has also been an associate pastor of both missions and youth. Donna has worked as a secretary. They have two children, Tyler and Austin. For several years Joe and Donna had discussed going to the mission field someday. Finally, in 1996, the time seemed right and they applied to be career missionaries with Wycliffe Bible Translators. They are now serving in Cameroon, West Africa. Donna is working in a secretarial capacity, while Joe is working with vernacular media. God uses Vernacular Media Services personnel working with translators and local people to produce media, such as audio cassettes, videos, radio programs etc., all in the mother-tongue language of the people. Some areas where the Bible is being translated have oral cultures; the people communicate through spoken words and do not have a written form. Media produced in a group's own heart language and style, such as audiocassettes with Scripture and music, can be very effective in reaching the people with God's Word. Even in remote areas where no electricity or batteries are available, hand-cranked tape players can be used.
