The Good News

In this month’s article we are going to explore how to share the Gospel with someone using John 14:6 as the platform.  …. In John 14:6 Jesus says, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.”  In this short statement, Jesus makes 3 declarations about Himself which you must understand in order to believe and accept His gift of salvation.

First, Jesus says He is the Way.  The way to where?  The way back to God.  The way to heaven. Why do we need a way back to God?  Simply put, because God is holy and man is not. The Bible tells us in Genesis 1:1 that God is the creator of all things including the earth and all those who inhabit it.  This means that He is also the ruler and owner of all that dwell in the earth because He is their creator. Now, God is not like us for He is perfect in all His attributes.  He is perfectly loving, perfectly wise, and He is perfectly holy. When the Bible speaks of God being holy it means that He is “set apart”. In particular, He is set apart from sin.

What is sin and where did it come from?  Sin is anything that goes contrary to what God says is good, just and right.  A good way to understand where sin came from is to look at the life of Adam and Eve.  God said they could eat from any tree in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil for if they ate from that tree they would die.  Satan comes along and tricks them into eating the fruit and right then all of mankind changes as sin and death enter the world. All mankind born after Adam are born as sinners—spiritually dead and separated from God.  Romans 6:23 says:  For the wages of sin is death. You work so many hours each week and you are given wages accordingly.  Well, God in the same way is keeping track of all the wrong things you have done and is tallying them up against you for judgment day which no man can escape.  What will you do on that day? You need help, don’t you? You need a way back to Him. Jesus is that way. He is not only the way but He is the truth.

Jesus also says He is the Truth. This means that all Jesus says is true!  Jesus is the only man who lived a perfect life.  He never stole, lusted or ever told a lie. How can this be?  It is true because of who Jesus is. He was not just a man but he was the God Man.  He is 100% man and 100% God. He is God, the eternal one. Colossians 2:9 says: For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form. Many people claim to speak the truth, promote truth and live for the truth but only Jesus claims to be truth.   Jesus says that He is the only way to God.

Finally, Jesus says He is the Life. Here He is speaking of eternal life—life which never ends.  Jesus holds the key to eternal life and is the only one who can give it.  But why? Jesus paid the price of death for sin. The Bible says that Jesus Christ is the Savior that paid the “sin debt” we have accumulated and that Jesus Christ is God incarnate and sinless man combined.   Jesus did what no other person could do—He lived a perfect life and then died on the cross to pay for sins that were not His own. His blood was shed showing that His life was forfeited for others. He is our substitute.  Even more, God was completely satisfied with His death and showed this by raising Him from the dead. This reveals that death could not hold Him down and as a result Jesus alone can offer eternal life!

The Bible says that this Good News about Jesus, the Gospel, is a free gift.  It cost Jesus Christ dearly but to those He saves, it is a free gift. This means you can’t earn it.  But how do you get this free gift? You receive the gift through belief in Christ and repentance. You must believe in Christ as your Savior and recognize what you have done is wrong and turn away from that life and come to God.  Are you ready accept God’s gift of salvation?

Rejoicing in the Gospel of Christ,

    Pastor Jason
