Synopsis of Ministry:
Bruce and Laura have been in Japan for almost 29 years. Having been married only 7 months, they went to Japan in answer to a call for English teachers for a new church and in obedience to John 15:16 and I Peter 2:5. After working with that church and studying Japanese, we were asked to officially join SEND International and start a daughter church. We turned that church over to a Japanese pastor and were then asked to direct SEND’s Bible Camp in the mountains of Tokyo and in obedience to Jonah 4:11 we accepted. We rejoice in all the Lord is doing at Okutama Bible Chalet-a year-round camp and retreat center, which sponsors 17 evangelistic camps a year.
About SEND International and Okutama Bible Chalet
In light of the urgency of the hour and the lostness of men, we are committed to a life of obedience to Jesus Christ to proclaim the Gospel and establish His church. Our ministries involve the following:
- Starting Churches – SEND’s primary goal is to start churches where none exist and serve the church where it does exist. This is done through evangelism, nurturing disciples and developing leaders.
- Evangelizing the Unreached – SEND missionaries use a wide variety of outreach methods to meet unbelievrs and bring them to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
- Nurturing Disciples – SEND missionaries strive to disciple new believers into responsible, reproducing Christians who will form reproducing churches.
- Developing Leaders – SEND is committed to train, teach and develop leaders in every place of ministry, under the accountability and authority of the local church.
Okutama Bible Chalet, a Christian camp and conference center, is owned and operated by SEND International in cooperation with the Japan Evangelical Church Association. The purpose of Okutama Bible Chalet is to glorify God and serve the church through camping programs of evangelism and Bible education in a safe, enjoyable outdoor environment.
More Interesting Tidbits from the Harris’
Bruce and Laura have 3 grown children, Lydia, David and Timothy, and though only Timothy was born in Japan, they were all made in Japan. Bruce enjoys sports (he played football in high school) and jogging, has climbed Mr. Fujii 5 times and enjoys doing some painting, especially for children’s messages, and eating walnut bread that is easy to find in Japan, hard to find in the States. Laura is the sister (older or younger, we’ll let you decide) of RBC’s Ralph Loper, and she will be glad to fill you in on what kind of a child he was. When she was in the 5th grade, she and her class were on a weekly TV show on the educational channel. She home-schooled their 3 children for 18 years in total, enjoys speaking to ladies and children’s groups and enjoys cooking and doing sewing projects at camp.
